Bookaholic L.L.C. organized a book sale sponsored in the classrooms of Bath Spa University in Ajman which ran from 12-13 April and offered huge savings on new and second-hand books.

Books were discounted from 30% up to 80% and were widely categorized under three main genres of Fiction, Non-Fiction and Children.

The second fair of the company since the beginning of 2019, this season’s sale introduced a section for new books. The lowest price for a used book was AED 2 while the lowest and highest prices for a new book were AED 15 and AED 25 respectively.

Aqsa Anwar Mohammed, founder of Bookaholic L.L.C., said: “It’s hard to find books for a cheap price. [Being an avid reader] I had the same problem. So I just decided to have my own thing where I can offer people books at a price that you can’t find in the UAE.

“Let’s say if you go to a shop and buy a book for AED 50, here you can buy two books at that same price.”

The book fair was visited by almost 1000 people during the duration of the two days and sold approximately 3000 books. One person was estimated to buy an average of 10 books at a time.

Arya Rajesh, a housewife and a keen reader, said: “I came all the way from Sharjah just for this book sale. Between my two kids, I barely get time to read but this sale was too tempting. It’s an excellent idea.”

Excessive rates make Rajesh “pinch her pockets” as being a mother she believes in prioritizing her kids and does not “feel like spending so much money on books anymore.”

“It’s such a wonderful idea; most people read these books probably once or twice. At least for the amount of trees that are being cut more people deserve to read it.

I think book sales like this should happen more often and come towards Sharjah as well,” said Rajesh.

Since its launch in 2016, Bookaholic L.L.C. has held fairs in partnership with other institutes and the visitors to the book sale have rapidly increased over the years.

“We’re planning to make this bigger next year and to go to other emirates as well,” said Mohammed.
